Great news! Action Staffing Solutions is seeking experienced and compassionate nurse practitioners.

Position Summary:

A Nurse Practitioner in a corrections setting is responsible for providing medical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment inmates typically in an outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized house setting for acute care, emergencies, or chronic condition support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Provide medical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for acute, chronic, and emergency care
  • Perform physical examinations and obtain detailed histories on assigned patients
  • Assess and treat chronic and acute medical problems and provide direct patient care
  • Prescribe medications from the formulary using applicable guidelines and policies
  • Order lab tests and other diagnostic testing pertinent to the medical care of offenders
  • Perform minor medical procedures such as suturing lacerations, incision and drainage of abscesses, excision of cysts, application of splints and casts and removal of toenails
  • Assist in pre and post operative care
  • Provide emergency medical coverage to offenders including performing basic life support and lifesaving procedures for emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies
  • May be required to assess dental and mental health emergencies and refer appropriately
  • Conduct sick call, emergency treatment or chronic care clinic as assigned
  • Make rounds in an infirmary or skilled nursing care setting
  • Diagnose and treat medical conditions and disorders within scope of practice
  • Using systems provided document accurately and in a timely manner inmate medical records using correct format and appropriate language/forms
  • Document appropriate information thoroughly in the patient’s chart, transcribe medical orders and complete reports at shift change
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and facility regulations
  • Perform offender health record reviews
  • Review laboratory, x-ray and EKG results and intervene as medically indicated
  • Perform ventipuncture and other related laboratory tests
  • May occasionally be required to participate in inmate restraint
  • Follow clinical services standards and procedures, protocols, guidelines or policies pertaining to medical practice and treatment as specified by Clinical Services administration
  • Accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment including key control, counting syringes, needles, and narcotics and more; Informs supervisor of any safety and security violations or concerns
  • Maintain a professional demeanor with inmates, patients, staff, and visitors following communication and safety protocols
  • Operation of a variety of clinical equipment
  • Completion of required training as assigned
  • Report all incidents, accidents, or potential hazards in accordance with established policies
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

License, Certification, Education:

  • Current Advanced Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner license valid for the state in which work will be completed
  • Must have full prescriptive authority (RXN) as issued by the state and the DEA
  • BLS/CPR certification is required
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Graduation of a state approved nursing program and completion of a state approved competency examination
  • Skills testing prior to hire and annually is required.

Experience: Twelve months experience in a patient care setting, training or education in a clinical setting can supplement up to six months of this experience.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must complete the onboarding and hiring process including application(s), documents, competency testing, background investigation(s) and drug screening
    • Backgrounds must be clear of any felony convictions
  • Must complete all required training as assigned by Action Staffing Solutions and client/facility pre-assignment and annually including but not limited to sharps injury prevention, HIPAA, and cultural awareness.
  • Certifications and Licenses including a current valid driver’s license
  • Immunization Records COVID-19, Hep B, TB test/chest x-ray, influenza for the current season
    • All employees must be fully vaccinated (defined as two weeks following the completion of the full series of the COVID-19 vaccine) and submit documentation proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Religious and medical exemptions and reasonable accommodations will be addressed as required by law.
  • Must maintain all required licenses, certifications, and health records
  • Resume with 10 full years of employment (explanation of gaps such as education is accepted)
  • Language: Ability to read, write and communicate in the English language required
  • Must have excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to assess situations to make independent, policy compliant decisions
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to serve the incarcerated population with empathy, while staying objective and assertive. Must be able to work with people of diverse backgrounds

Physical Requirements:

Due to the nature of correctional facilities physical demands may vary between facilities and day to day, this is not an all-inclusive list.

  • Must be able to see, hear and communicate
  • Must be able to use proper body positioning and body mechanics including to
    • Regularly stand, sit, walk, run, climb, kneel, crouch, bend, twist
    • Dexterity and fine motor function including strength, control, lifting, reaching and tool usage.
    • Must be able to lift 20 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds infrequently, and lift or assist in lifting more than 50 pounds at times.
